Classical Conditioning
Scenario: Dave at the Dentist
- Dave's Experience as a Child: When Dave was little, he went to the dentist to get a filling. The procedure caused him a lot of pain.
- Unconditioned Stimulus (UCS): The dentist (causing pain).
- Unconditioned Response (UCR): Dave's pain.
- Dave's Experience as an Adult: As an adult, Dave goes in for a routine dental check-up but still feels a lot of stress.
- Conditioned Stimulus (CS): Routine dental check-up.
- Conditioned Response (CR): Dave's stress.
Operant Conditioning
Scenario: Susie at School
- Positive Reinforcement: When Susie does well in school, her teacher gives her a treat. This reward encourages Susie to continue performing well.
- Negative Reinforcement: Susie's teacher removes a bad grade when she improves. This removal of an undesirable outcome encourages her to keep improving.
- Positive Punishment: If Susie performs poorly, her teacher makes her stay late after school. This adds an undesirable consequence to discourage poor performance.
- Negative Punishment: If Susie misbehaves, her teacher takes away her phone. This removes something Susie likes to discourage misbehavior.
Summary
- Classical Conditioning: Learning through association (Dave associates the dentist with pain).
- Operant Conditioning: Learning through consequences (Susie learns through rewards and punishments).
